I love modern technology. It wasn’t always so. I used to think that the industrial revolution was responsible for a whole host of social ills. But since my kids started taking some classes via their online school and I got my new laptop, I’ve begun to see how technology can be used for good.
For example, I no longer have to yell downstairs. Daniel, my oldest, has a course load that keeps him on the computer almost all the time. Though he does unplug for an ocassional football game, potty brake, food intake, etc…but I digress. Since he is almost always on, I simply log on my laptop, pull up Google Talk, and IM him. He then makes sure the message gets to the intended receiver.
I can also summon him for chores. All without having to yell down the stairs. Here is an example of a typical exchange between us.
11:09 PM me: it’s that time
Daniel: …?
me: do you hear ‘em?
Daniel: …? The call of us needing to go get junk food?
me: all those dirty dishes beggin’ to be washed
Daniel: ok. Radically different things..
I pick the first…
me: oh! I think I hear the table too…….
Daniel: Creepy.
me: *table calling*, ” Daniel…..wash me daniel, daniel…”
Daniel: I think you’re skitzo. We should take you to a hospital.
me: only took ya 16 years to figure that out? I never thought of you as slow.
Daniel: a mental institution. Where they, ya know, check your head.
Daniel: Especially when you hear inanimate objects speaking
me: LOL
Daniel: like tables and dishes
me: when you are responsible for keeping your own house clean, inanimate objects will speak to you too
Daniel: Probably
me: and then you’ll call me…
and give me some sob story…
and I’ll feel sorry for you…
and come clean your house…
not.
me: I’m so glad we can have this special mother-son relationship…
Daniel: XD
me: thanks to Google Talk…
This message brought to you by modern technology and love between mothers and sons everywhere.

Dang, I wish MY mom was that awesome-ly techno savvy… she still uses the “shout up the stairs” method.
Well, to be fair, I am fairly new to all this “techno-savvy”.
And I still do have to yell sometimes, but you didn’t hear that from me
